Open Letter to The European Parlament

by Azerbaijan-Danmark Venskabsforening

To The European Parlament

Many different ethnic groups are living in todays Iran. The Azerbaijanis, the Beluchis and the Turkmens, the Kurds the Arabs and many other minorities have their home inside the borders of Iran.

Around 30 millions Azerbaijanis are living in Iran. The north-western part of Iran is their homeland, but Azerbaijanis are found mostly everywhere in the country. Even though they have named it “The Islamic Republic”, the country is ruled by Persian chauvinists who consider themselves a master race and treat other people as second-class beings and humiliate them.

30 Millions of Azerbaijanis have no right to be tought their mother tongue in school. It is forbidden to edit or print any cultural media in the Azerbaijan language. All historic and cultural works are systematically ruined by the Mulla regime. Only a very small group of Teheran friendly Mullas are permitted to print fundamentalistic propaganda in Azerbaijan.

The Azerbaijanis have no cultural rights. Poets, writers, scientists and journalists are under constant surveillance. The smallest activity in favour of the cultural rights of the Azerbaijanis is punished with very heavy sentences. Many prominent persons have been tortured and have disappeared without leaving any trace after being arrested by the police.

The latest example: An azerbaijani political activist has been arrested and tortured to death by the police in the town of Ardabil. His body was found in a field. His name was Mohammad Qasiiem Hakimzadeh. Two other activists have ben sentenced to death, their names are:

Abase Lesani and Parvize Siyabiye Gorjan. They, too were taken prisoners in Ardabil. More than 500 azerbaijani activists are being held in Iranian prisons today.

The photos af the two sentenced to death are shown on the following adress:

During a peaceful traditional Azerbaijani march to the mountain of Savalan around 100 people were arrested without any reason. The Iranian judges are demanding exorbitant large amounts of bail for their release, even though they are innocent.

Investments in the Azerbaijan regions are being withheld and industrial activities in those areas are being moved to Persian areas. For example the tractor factory in Tebriz has been moved to Arak. Also the Azerbaijans natural ressources are being taken from the regions.

Freyden is a Azerbaijani region in the Mid Iran and the azerbaijani farmers in this region are short of water because the water is being lead through the huge pipe system to the nuclear reactor in Natanz several hundreds of kilometers away.

Persian chauvinists intend to expel the azerbaijans from their land by spreading fear and spoiling their natural and human ressources.

The opposition in Iran do not accept the Azerbaijans human rights, that is why the world is unaware of our existance.

Today many Azerbaijanis have lost faith in peaceful solutions. They believe blood must flow before the free world acknowledge their sufferings.

This dangerous development must be stopped. Therefore Europe must listen to the cry of the Azerbaijans. They must realize that 30 millions are living under constant oppression as slaves in their owncountry denied their
basic human rights.

We ask for your help in our democratic fight against tyranny and for our human rights.
